THE THREE BASIC FEELS
The Mattress industry offers 3 basic feels. It doesn't matter who makes it or where it comes from, it will ALWAYS fall into one of three basic feels.
1. "The FIRM"
Will have a small, tight quilt pattern, with little cushioning, and feel flat and firm.
2. "The PLUSH"
A slightly larger quilt pattern, perhaps the size of a small frisbee, a bit more cushioning than the firm, ...still a stout feel, but with more cushion relief than the firm.
3. '"The PILLOW TOP"
Always has a maximum amount of cushioning. As the name implies "pillowing on top". Depending upon how much, it can feel extremely lofty and soft. These will usually be very thick mattresses, sheets, must in extreme cases, be special ordered.
IMPORTANT TO REALIZE
The FEEL of a mattress is achieved by what is installed ABOVE your coils. Simply the cushioning type,and the amount of cushioning used.
The SUPPORT and DURABILITY will be provided by the coils themselves. How many coils there are, the thickness of the wire, and the design will ALL play a role in the health of the mattress and how long it lasts you.
IMPORTANT MYTHS
1. "A FIRM mattress means supportive"
Not necessarily. Again a "firm" describes a FEEL provided by the cushion or lack of cushioning. The COILS provide SUPPORT.
2. " Softer mattress are bad for your back"
No. You may enjoy a thick lofty pillow top that feels like a cloud. As long as you have a solid coil unit below that cushioning, healthy support will be there for your back.
3. "Pillow tops are the best"
There are simply NO advantages or disadvantages to a pillow top. It is a comfort choice. One persons dreamy feel, is another persons nightmare.
